This was done using ref of a fighter that was on one of the seasons of Ultimate Fighter...I don't know the guy's name. Anyway, it was fun...I tried using the toothbrush as an actual brush for the blood effect on his gloves. Not sure if I like it or not, but experimentation is what this is all about right? This took me about an hour and 15 minutes. I'm totally not sticking to the hour time limit I set at the beginning...So yeah, I suck.

This one took far longer than I intended it to. I wanted to try some of the techniques used by Franklin Booth, whom I greatly admire, but I realized very soon after I started that it was a time consuming process. I couldn't very well rush it, because I had already started with this technique...I think this one took around 2 hours. I need to get it together.

Okay, so this definitely took me longer than an hour(about 2 1/2 hours total.) I just wanted to experiment with some color stuff, so I decided to do it. All the traditional stuff was done in an hour, with an additional hour and half on the Photoshop work. I'm trying to figure out the direction I want to go in stylistically. Hope you like!

Here's mine! I may have taken a little bit longer than an hour on this...I had to stop in the middle of it for various reasons. Its probably no more than a few minutes over though. The ref we used was so awesome...Its Junior Dos Santos with a devastating body shot on Crocop. JDS is a future heavyweight champ I think...Anyway, hope you like!

So, technically I didn't get this up on the blog until the next day, so I guess I kinda skipped a day, but there will be another one up tomorrow--promise. This was probably the most difficult time I've had with any of these, which I guess is a good thing. Lots of foreshortening in the photo, and the athlete, Allison Stokke, is built like a brick house...I had a hard time not slimming her down a bit to make her look a little more feminine, but I tried to restrain myself.

Had to do some layouts for Dellec earlier today...Should be done with issue 5 by the end of the month...Went to the gym, grubbed out, and finally sat down to work on this...Lotsa fun! I actually wasn't too excited about the ref that Fabio chose, but while working on it I realized it had a lot of potential. Thats the awesome thing about this...I never would have chosen to draw a kid in a space costume, and I wouldn't have chosen this ref as a first choice, but I guess thats how you grow as an artist...3rd day and I'm still excited about this!! I really think we're all going to become much better if we stick with it diligently...Materials: Raphael 2 brush, Kolinsky 8 brush, Nikko 357 nib, Higgans Eternal ink, photoshop.

Hey everyone, here's my version from this weeks reference. One of the main things I want to do with these forthcoming pieces is to experiment with some techniques I don't normally use. For this one I used ink and brush, then ink wash, ink splatter with a toothbrush, and then finished up by adding some details to the hair with a fine point Pitt pen. I've been wanting to try some of the splatter effects with ink and white paint for a while...This is literally the first time I've tried it and I really like the look! Definitely adds some spontaneity and energy that isn't possible with any other method that I know of. Anyway, this was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to doing it again tomorrow!

Ahoy!
Hey everyone! Welcome to Figure Drawers. I'm Micah Gunnell, mega-super-star artist extraordinaire of the blockbuster ultra-smash hits Soulfire: Dying of the Light, Shrugged, and Dellec. What? You haven't heard of me?? Poppycock! Hmm...I drew some stories in the Heroes graphic novels too...Ring a bell? No? Ah well...Anyway, I've made this blog in order to solve a problem. I need an excuse to do more figure studies, and to push myself in ways that I'm currently unable to with my regular work. I've invited a few of my bestest buds to contribute as well: Chris Staggs, currently the undisputed most popular artist in comics(second to myself of course), who you obviously know from his recent work on Deadpool Team-up, and Fabio Redivo, who is the Miyagi to all the Daniel-san's in the world of comics. A world-renowned teacher at the world renowned Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic art. Its a stellar line-up obviously. In all seriousness, our goal is to do one figure drawing a day, all using the same piece of ref. I'm imposing a time limit of one hour per drawing, simply because we're all busy people, and all perfectionists...I know if I don't specify this limitation, this blog will turn into something it was never intended to be. Simply put, we're all here to improve our art, learn new techniques and have fun doing it. Thanks for checking us out, and I hope you enjoy the results!
