Alright here's what I got today, Anderson Silva baby!

Okay, we're back...The greatest of all time, Anderson Silva! He'll be obliterating Demian Maia this Saturday night in Abu Dhabi.

This was done using ref of a fighter that was on one of the seasons of Ultimate Fighter...I don't know the guy's name. Anyway, it was fun...I tried using the toothbrush as an actual brush for the blood effect on his gloves. Not sure if I like it or not, but experimentation is what this is all about right? This took me about an hour and 15 minutes. I'm totally not sticking to the hour time limit I set at the beginning...So yeah, I suck.

Hey all, here's mine for today...This one was more difficult than I thought it would be...

Fun shapes in this one...

To 2

Here's what I got today, I had a hard time with this one =)

Done using photo ref of one of my favorite models, Laetitia Casta. This one was really fun...I'm enjoying using the quill to create texture. Again, I failed the time limit by maybe 15 minutes or so, but I'm getting a little faster with the quill...

This one took far longer than I intended it to. I wanted to try some of the techniques used by Franklin Booth, whom I greatly admire, but I realized very soon after I started that it was a time consuming process. I couldn't very well rush it, because I had already started with this technique...I think this one took around 2 hours. I need to get it together.

Okay, so this definitely took me longer than an hour(about 2 1/2 hours total.) I just wanted to experiment with some color stuff, so I decided to do it. All the traditional stuff was done in an hour, with an additional hour and half on the Photoshop work. I'm trying to figure out the direction I want to go in stylistically. Hope you like!

Kimono chick from ref that I found on Tons of great photos on there!

charlie3 - BEND!

Went with this one today since I kinda regretted missing it when it came around.

I missed yesterday...So here's the one I was going to draw yesterday. This guy has crazy hair!

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Here's mine for today! I don't feel I quite lived up to the quality of the ref...I may take another stab at it one day, maybe with more time to spend on it. There were a lot of subtleties of the lighting that I didn't quite capture to my liking.

charlie2 - WRINKLE!

Wow, Micah!
Here's my humble offering!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Here's my old monk...Awesome ref for today...This guy just has so many wrinkles on his face, and the photo was lit from below...Lots of fun to draw!

Here's mine! I may have taken a little bit longer than an hour on this...I had to stop in the middle of it for various reasons. Its probably no more than a few minutes over though. The ref we used was so awesome...Its Junior Dos Santos with a devastating body shot on Crocop. JDS is a future heavyweight champ I think...Anyway, hope you like!

charlie1 - PUNCH!

My first contribution to this blog. Looking at the photo against this, the dude on the right was leaning into his punch a lot more.

So, technically I didn't get this up on the blog until the next day, so I guess I kinda skipped a day, but there will be another one up tomorrow--promise. This was probably the most difficult time I've had with any of these, which I guess is a good thing. Lots of foreshortening in the photo, and the athlete, Allison Stokke, is built like a brick house...I had a hard time not slimming her down a bit to make her look a little more feminine, but I tried to restrain myself.

This marks the end of a full week of doing these figure drawings. I'm still enjoying myself but I think I need to find a way of getting a little faster, because I have a lot of other work I'm doing that actually pays me money :) However, I'm not giving up! Hope you guys like.

Monday, March 22, 2010

Alright here's my first addition, I don't do much figure drawing so this is gonna be quite a learning experience

Today's piece...Need to crop off the left side black line but I'm in a hurry...Hope you like!

Here I am on the solo tip...Hope you like...:)

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Numba fo'!! Not much to say about this one...It was kinda tough because my printer had no ink so I had to look at the screen for the ref...Its definitely easier to have a print out. Anyway, I don't know what happened to my figure drawing compadres yesterday, but if I have to go it alone I will :)

Had to do some layouts for Dellec earlier today...Should be done with issue 5 by the end of the month...Went to the gym, grubbed out, and finally sat down to work on this...Lotsa fun! I actually wasn't too excited about the ref that Fabio chose, but while working on it I realized it had a lot of potential. Thats the awesome thing about this...I never would have chosen to draw a kid in a space costume, and I wouldn't have chosen this ref as a first choice, but I guess thats how you grow as an artist...3rd day and I'm still excited about this!! I really think we're all going to become much better if we stick with it diligently...Materials: Raphael 2 brush, Kolinsky 8 brush, Nikko 357 nib, Higgans Eternal ink, photoshop.

Day 002

Command + Shift + L can be very unexpected sometimes.

Here's my space kid! I added a cigarette because his hand was in a good position for it, plus I thought it would look funny.

space kiddie

I ran out of time on this one so I'll post it as is but I might add some color to it as some point and post it over at my Bolognafingers.blogspot site.

day 001

This made laundry time much more fun!

Hey everyone, here's my version from this weeks reference. One of the main things I want to do with these forthcoming pieces is to experiment with some techniques I don't normally use. For this one I used ink and brush, then ink wash, ink splatter with a toothbrush, and then finished up by adding some details to the hair with a fine point Pitt pen. I've been wanting to try some of the splatter effects with ink and white paint for a while...This is literally the first time I've tried it and I really like the look! Definitely adds some spontaneity and energy that isn't possible with any other method that I know of. Anyway, this was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to doing it again tomorrow!

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Hey everyone! Welcome to Figure Drawers. I'm Micah Gunnell, mega-super-star artist extraordinaire of the blockbuster ultra-smash hits Soulfire: Dying of the Light, Shrugged, and Dellec. What? You haven't heard of me?? Poppycock! Hmm...I drew some stories in the Heroes graphic novels too...Ring a bell? No? Ah well...Anyway, I've made this blog in order to solve a problem. I need an excuse to do more figure studies, and to push myself in ways that I'm currently unable to with my regular work. I've invited a few of my bestest buds to contribute as well: Chris Staggs, currently the undisputed most popular artist in comics(second to myself of course), who you obviously know from his recent work on Deadpool Team-up, and Fabio Redivo, who is the Miyagi to all the Daniel-san's in the world of comics. A world-renowned teacher at the world renowned Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic art. Its a stellar line-up obviously. In all seriousness, our goal is to do one figure drawing a day, all using the same piece of ref. I'm imposing a time limit of one hour per drawing, simply because we're all busy people, and all perfectionists...I know if I don't specify this limitation, this blog will turn into something it was never intended to be. Simply put, we're all here to improve our art, learn new techniques and have fun doing it. Thanks for checking us out, and I hope you enjoy the results!
